Out-of-State Residency

Subject to pending or new legislation, non-resident students may have an additional fee per unit which is not covered by the GI Bill. Students utilizing Chapter 33 (Post 9/11 GI Bill) or Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill) may qualify for an exemption of the non-resident fees provided:

  • The veteran using the benefit or who transferred the benefit to a dependent spouse or child (Chapter 33 only) separated from active duty within 36 months of the first day the veteran or dependent starts classes
  • The period of active duty was 90 days or longer
  • The veteran or dependent provides SDSU with a copy of the applicable DD-214 showing the date of separation
  • The veteran or dependent provides SDSU with a copy of the Certificate of Eligibility showing entitlement to Chapter 30 or 33

Active Duty Military and Dependents Stationed in California

Nonresident tuition fee waivers are available to eligible new and continuing undergraduate and graduate level military students, regardless of educational purposes. Active duty military personnel are eligible for a nonresident tuition fee waiver if the military member is stationed on active duty in California for more than 30 days on the residency determination date. The tuition fee waiver will be effective until the student's continuous enrollment ends, and still applies after graduating with an undergraduate degree and immediately enrolling in a graduate program at SDSU the following term. The nonresident tuition fee waiver does not qualify students as a California residents; it simply waives the out-of-state tuition fee. Students who wish to have their residency status re-classified will need to apply for residency.

Dependents of active duty military personnel are eligible for a nonresident tuition fee waiver if the military member is stationed on active duty in California for more than 30 days on the residency determination date. The tuition fee waiver will be effective until the student's continuous enrollment ends, and still applies after graduating with an undergraduate degree and immediately enrolling in a graduate program at SDSU the following term.

Discharged Military Personnel

Service members who discharged from the military within the state of California may be eligible to receive a residency status exception for one year to be utilized within two years of the date of discharge, retirement, etc. Students who wish to have their residency status re-classified will need to apply for residency.
