Healthy Habits to Prevent the Cold & Flu

It's important for all members of the San Diego State University community to take measures to help prevent the spread of the cold, flu, and other communicable diseases.

Actions that all of us can take to stay well and keep our campus community healthy include:

1. Getting a flu shot each year.  This is the single best way to prevent the flu.

2. Wash your hands frequently.  Use warm water and soap and wash for at least 20 seconds.  Alcohol-based hand sanitizer can also be effective when water and soap aren't available.

3. Avoid close contact with those who are sick.  Avoid close contact with others who are ill, including hugging or kissing until symptoms are gone.

4. When you are sick, stay home.  If you are not feeling well, stay home from work, school, and other errands, if possible.  Remain home until you have been fever free for at least 24 hours.

5. Avoid touching your eyes, ears, nose, or mouth.  Germs are often spread by coming into contact with a contaminated item or surface and then touching your eyes, ears, nose, or mouth.

6. Don't share food, drinks, or eating utensils. Again, these items can transmit germs.

7. Regularly disinfect surfaces and objects that are frequently touched.  This includes door knobs, keyboards, countertops, and cellphones.  Use a disinfectant cloth or use a disinfectant spray.

8. Get plenty of sleep, stay physically active, and eat nutritious foods.  Maintaining these basic health behaviors helps to prevent the cold and flu.
