SDSU's Department of Well-being & Health Promotion is here to help students learn positive ways to get and stay healthy so they achieve their best not just academically, but in all areas of life.

Your student's well-being is our top priority.

The information provided here is intended to help parents address their concerns about their student's health concerns. If you need further assistance, you are encouraged to contact our office directly.

Alcohol and other drugs

Are you concerned about your student's use of alcohol and other drugs? Not sure how to approach the subject, or what to say? Should you even bother?

Yes.

According to a College Task Force report by the National Institutes of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the consequences of students' excessive alcohol use in college are more significant, destructive, and costly than parents my estimate.

Research has shown that open, 2-way communication between parents and their sons or daughters can greatly reduce students' heavy drinking.

While SDSU's rates of alcohol consumption are below the national average, it is important that you maintain an open dialogue with your student and that you remain a source of guidance and support.
