Henry Villegas, Ph.D.
Dean of Students for SDSU-Imperial Valley
Dr. Henry Villegas has over 30 years of experience in higher education administration. He has held key positions, including Assistant Athletic Director for Student Development at Indiana State University, Associate Athletic Director for Student Development at the University of New Mexico, and Associate Director of EOP & Ethnic Affairs at San Diego State University. Since January 2021, he has served as the Dean of Student Affairs at SDSU Imperial Valley.
As Dean of Students, Dr. Villegas leads the SDSU Imperial Valley Student Affairs unit. He has a deep understanding of the strategic importance of student affairs programs and their significant impact on student success. In 2016, upon transitioning out of athletics, he was awarded the National Association for Athletic Academic Advisors’ Lan Hewlett Award for his substantial contributions to the field of student-athlete academic support, which included leadership, administrative skills, innovation, staff development, and contributions through publications and professional development. Dr. Villegas earned his associate degree in liberal studies from Southwestern College in Chula Vista, a bachelor’s degree in social science education from Indiana State University in 1990, a master’s degree in counseling from Indiana State University in 1992, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of New Mexico in 2016. His research focuses on the impact of intentional student support on underserved populations and the application of student development theory in student affairs.
A San Diego native and graduate of Hoover High School in San Diego, Dr. Villegas studied and played college football at Indiana State University, Southwestern College, and San Diego City College. He is married to Glenda and has a son, Zachary, who is a public school teacher in Memphis, Tennessee.
