Tuition Increase Effective Fall 2024

The California State University system’s Board of Trustees approved a tuition increase that will become effective in Fall 2024. While this increase will not impact your finances during the current academic year, it’s important to note that tuition decisions are made at the CSU system not at the individual university level. Therefore, our goal is:

  • To make sure you have the information you and your family need to plan for the next academic year.
  • To share resources available to help offset costs for qualifying students.

FAQ

The approved CSU system-wide tuition increase will be effective for Fall 2024. Tuition is scheduled to increase annually 6% per year over five years. Before the conclusion of the scheduled increases, the CSU Chancellor must report on the impact of tuition increases to the CSU Board of Trustees to ensure student access and success outcomes are maintained

Mandatory campus fees are not tied to tuition increases. Most mandatory campus fees (like health center fees or recreational facility fees) are increased marginally over time, consistent with the Higher Education Price Index (HEPI), which typically trends lower than the rate of inflation. This annual adjustment in fees generally fluctuates between 2-4%. Tuition rates are established at the CSU Board of Trustees, whereas mandatory fees are set by the campus through either student referendum or the student alternative consultation processes. Fee increases are also determined through either student referendum or alternative consultation.
The same percentage increase will be applied to all enrolled CSU students programs (e.g., undergraduate, credential, graduate).

Per the newly approved CSU Tuition Policy, 33% of new tuition revenue will be allocated directly for financial aid. Additional priorities for newly generated tuition revenue include:

  • * Academic and student support services
  • Basic needs and mental health services
  • Title IX implementation and ongoing costs
  • Infrastructure, including facilities and ongoing maintenance
  • Compensation to attract and retain outstanding faculty and staff

For more information on the approved tuition increase, visit the CSU Multi-Year Tuition Increase page.

The CSU would increase the non-loan financial aid by an amount equal to approximately 33% of the new tuition revenue. Additionally, 60% of undergraduate students’ financial aid will be adjusted to receive more aid, reflecting the higher tuition, and thus will be unaffected by the increase. The next 18% of undergraduate students have tuition at least partially covered by a combination of grants, scholarships, or waivers.
Big changes are coming to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2024-25 aid year. The Federal Student Aid (FSA) will launch the 2024-25 application in late December/January. Pay close attention to the Financial Aid Office’s FAFSA webpage and CADAA webpage regarding important information and updates.
If you are eligible for State University Grant (SUG), Cal Grant A, or Cal Grant B Fee Assistance, those awards will automatically be increased to cover the higher CSU Basic Tuition, and you will not need to pay more in total tuition costs. If you are not receiving aid from one of these programs, you may be required to pay more in tuition if your other grant aid is not enough to cover the fee increase.
Due to the implementation of new federal aid regulations impacting all US universities, there will be some changes for financial aid starting in the 2024-25 academic year. The purpose of the changes are to simplify the application for students and parents, as well as to increase the number of students that may be eligible for financial aid. Please note: These are not changes implemented by the CSU or made at the university-level. Traditionally, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) are released each year on October 1. However, this year, the FAFSA and CADAA applications for 2024-25 will be available in December 2023. Additionally, due to the delay in the availability of the 2024-25 FAFSA applications, the California priority filing deadline of March 2, 2024 has been extended to April 2, 2024 to allow families more time.
To apply for financial aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov and be sure to list SDSU (School Code 001151) on your list of schools. When you file a FAFSA, you will be considered for all types of state and federal aid: grants, work study, student and parent loans, and some scholarships. If you do not meet the citizenship or eligible non-citizen requirements on the FAFSA but have an AB 540 nonresident tuition exemption, you can file a California Dream Act Application (CADAA). Students who file a Dream Act application are eligible for state and CSU financial aid.
SUG, Cal Grant A, and Cal Grant B Fee Assistance are all tied to the CSU Tuition that you are charged. As the CSU Tuition increase becomes effective, those awards will also be increased dollar-for-dollar. If you receive it, the California Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) may also help cover the increased cost. For eligible students, MCS awards will cover a portion of any remaining cost of attendance not already met by other aid.
If you are unable to pay your fees in full, SDSU offers a payment plan to pay your tuition fees in installments. Please visit the University Bursar's page for information on Installment Plans.
The SDSU Basic Needs Center aims to connect students to resources that prevent or assist them through situations related to food insecurities, housing stability, or unforeseen financial crises that impact student success. Using a holistic approach to well-being, the Basic Needs Center supports students by leveraging a campus-wide collaboration that utilizes on and off-campus partnerships and provides direct referrals based on each student’s unique circumstances. The Basic Needs Center empowers students to identify and access long term, sustainable solutions during/throughout their academic career at SDSU and beyond.
