POSITION TITLE: Research Assistant I-Infectious Disease
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Research Assistant will support the TB biology team with daily tasks, which may
include conducting research, preparing reagents and managing data. Working conditions
will require adherence to basic safety precautions in BSL2 and BSL3 facilities while
working with various strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB). Individuals may be
offered, or in some cases required, to receive vaccinations against relevant agents.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Perform and assist in microbiological experiments, including preparation of media, bacterial culturing, and select methodologies to characterize activity of small-molecule inhibitors against TB.
- Perform and assist team members in molecular biology experiments, including isolation and purification of DNA & RNA, PCR and quantitative RT-PCR.
- Execute routine activity profiling of new compound analogs against BSL2 and/or BSL3 TB, including tissue culture, immunology and data analysis.
- Lab notebook documentation.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor of Science in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology or related field.
- 1-3 years BSL2 laboratory experience; prior BSL3 training and experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience with cell-based and/or biochemical assays using methods such as imaging, luminescence, fluorescence and absorbance in high-density formats.
- Proficiency with software such as GraphPad Prism, flow cytometry software and Microsoft Office, for data analysis, figure generation, data management and uploading.
- Experience with oral and written communications skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
Letter of recommendation and/or at least one professional reference is highly preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- This position works in a laboratory or vivarium environment.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION OR PROGRAM DESCRIPTION HIRING FOR
HERE Now, focuses on increasing awareness, promoting conversations and inspiring connections
to prevent suicide—one community, one school, one life at a time.
CONTEXT OF THE POSITION
This position’s objective is to provide comprehensive trauma-informed school-based
suicide Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) services countywide as part of the
Helping, Engaging, Reconnecting and Educating (HERE) Now program. This includes the
delivery of quality services on schools, including middle school and high school,
and in community locations to serve children, youth and transition aged youth (TAY),
with suicide prevention and early intervention services.
Essential functions include:
- Work with diverse groups of middle and high school youth (7th-12th grade), transitional aged-youth and their families in a culturally sensitive and culturally competent manner.
- Work with school personnel and community to reduce disparities and stigma in accessing mental health services and to provide high quality services to youth and families.
- Responsible for the implementation of the Signs of Suicide (SOS) presentation to students and caregivers.
- Plan, coordinate and conduct trainings and presentations to school staff, gatekeepers and stakeholders.
- Coordinate and provide risk assessments and crisis intervention, resources, and support services to youth/families.
- Predominantly conduct high risk assessments and provide individual intervention services to youth identified as “at risk” based on assessment.
- Care coordination with area mental health support and services as well as other needed services for youth/families with depression, other mental health problems, substance abuse or whose history of trauma would indicate a high risk for suicide or self-harm.
- Assist Clinical Coordinator in supporting other HERE Now staff in accomplishing their assessments whenever applicable.
- Assist Clinical Coordinator in training new hires and volunteers.
- Participate in coordinated crisis response including grief and loss counseling as needed.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- License-eligible in Marital and Family Therapy, Social Work, or Psychology by the state of California, and a minimum of two years of job-related experience, including direct service experience with at-risk, multiple families and children on a school campus and/or home-based settings. Must be registered with the Board of Behavioral Science and must be in good standing. Experience with youth, family, and community development.
- Bilingual required
- Must possess excellent oral and written skills and be able to provide services to small and large groups of youth and adults. Must be able to work with and represent a culturally and ethnically diverse community. Must work well autonomously with other agencies and program staff in varying disciplines.
- Must be highly organized with the ability to focus on multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced and busy school-based environment. Creativity and sense of humor a must. Materials and Mechanical Engineering: Bulk Physical and Mechanical Properties Testing,
Analysis, Characterization, and Qualification Support:
- Investigate, identify, and select use cases for the replacement of rubber parts with 3-D printed elastomers aboard surface ships and submarines, as well as in shipyard and shore environments.
- Experiment with and document investigations of 3-D printing molds with rigid, high-temperature polymers for rubber and insulated component fabrication.
- Design and 3-D print polymer (rigid and elastomeric), metal, ceramic, and composite test coupons.
- Conduct and document specific operational AdvM procedures, which includes but is not limited to: polymer fused deposition modeling (FDM) and stereolithography (SLA); metal atomic diffusion additive manufacturing (ADAM) and friction stir additive manufacturing (FSAM); and composite 3-D printing such as continuous fiber addition to polymer substrates.
Materials Science and Chemistry: Chemical Properties and Compatibility Testing, Analysis, Characterization, and Qualification Support:
- Investigate, identify, and select promising 3-D print material candidates (rigid and elastomer) based on material base chemistry, bulk physical properties, and 3-D printing technology.
- Design and conduct chemical experiments (such as chemical resistance, corrosion, and coating performance testing) for 3-D printed components while recording observations and collecting data.
- Conduct and document environmental resistance testing, including radiation (UV, X-ray, microwave), chemical solvent, flame, toxicity, reactivity, and oxidation (metal corrosion and polymer degradation).
QUALIFICATIONS:
Undergraduate Student 3: Must have course work in the discipline requested on the task order Statement of
Work. The student must be at the Senior level and have experience in 100% of the task
requirements and be able to accomplish 90% of the work independently..
Materials Science and/or Materials Engineering major preferred; relevant majors such
as Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Corrosion Engineering,
Manufacturing Engineering, and Physics may be suitable given relevant coursework,
laboratory research, and/or work experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Coursework and/or relevant work and/or laboratory experience from UC San
Diego Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, and Nano
Engineering course catalogs.
