Writing Workshops Spring 2025

Many of your professors and programs want you to write "in APA style." And while the APA Publication Manual is many things, it is not terribly user friendly. Nor can it help you figure out what elements your professors consider central to APA and what things they think are superfluous. This workshop can't exactly do that either, but it will cover the core baseline principles of writing in APA, including citations, formatting, clarity, and style.

The requirement to produce an abstract in different contexts typically requires meeting slightly different sets of expectations. This is the case with the two most common types: conference abstracts and journal article abstracts. Beyond just summarizing your work, a strong abstract should contextualize it within some larger academic conversation. It should also give the reader a sense of why it is worth reading your whole paper or attending your whole talk. This workshop will introduce strategies for outlining abstracts, as well as ways to adapt your abstracts for different purposes or audiences.
