Honor Fallen SDSU Aztecs at War Memorial

The annual War Memorial wreath-laying is 9 a.m. Nov. 3 on Aztec Green. Pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice by bringing flowers or wreaths. 

Keynote speaker is Gregory Daddis, director of the SDSU Center for War and Society and USS Midway Chair in Modern U.S. Military History. 

The ceremony will commemorate the addition of the 240th name on the monument: 1st Lt. Robert ‘Conn' Chaudoin, a platoon leader for Company C, 1st Battalion, 51st Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. He enlisted in the Army while a junior at San Diego State and was on a combat operation in Vietnam on March 27, 1971, when the area came under mortar attack.

Still Time to Help Aztecs Rock Hunger

Participate in the Aztecs Rock Hunger campaign to help fight food and nutrition insecurity in San Diego and the SDSU community. The annual drive concludes Nov. 5, and proceeds will benefit the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, A.S. Food Pantry and the SDSU Economic Crisis and Response Team. 

Help us reach this year's goal of $100,000 at the Homecoming Fun Run, 8:30-10 a.m. Nov. 4, or pick another donation option at the Aztecs Rock Hunger website.

for Spring Term

Registration for the spring 2024 term has begun. Make sure to log into my.SDSU to clear any charges or pending to-do items under your “tasks” tile prior to your registration date. 

Within a day or two after you register for your spring 2024 classes, you will see your charges on my.SDSU (under the “financial account” tile). Financial aid and scholarship disbursements will begin the week of Jan. 8, and the spring 2024 tuition and fees due date will be Jan. 12, 2024.

Financial Aid Changes for 2024-25

Reminder: Big changes are coming to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2024-25 aid year. The Federal Student Aid (FSA) will launch the 2024-25 application in late December/January. Pay close attention to the Financial Aid Office’s FAFSA webpage and CADAA webpage regarding important information and updates.

Study Abroad: Spring Break in Ghana — Learn More

Join the Department of Africana Studies at 4 p.m. Nov. 2 on Zoom for an informational meeting on this year's Alternative Spring Break Program in Ghana, which is March 29-April 8, 2024. The short-term study abroad promotes service on local, regional, national and international levels through programs that immerse students in different cultures.

Mundt Peace Scholarship
Application Deadline

The application window for the Mundt Peace Scholarship opens Nov. 1 and closes Nov. 27. 
The scholarship is a fully funded eight-week program that provides students with an international internship in Cape Town, South Africa. It is highly competitive with six spots available.

‘Why Iraq Still Matters’ 

It’s been 20 years since the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. To mark Veterans Day, attend the Center for War and Society Speaker Series for a panel discussion on “Why Iraq Still Matters" from 12:30-1:45 p.m. Nov. 9 at the SDSU Conrad Prebys Aztec Union Theatre. 

Speakers include Haverford College professor Zainab Saleh, Los Angeles Times Middle East bureau chief Nabih Bulos and Frank Sobchak, the chair of Irregular Warfare Studies at West Point’s Modern Warfare Institute. More at the CWS website.

Join us for a FREE three day off-campus retreat focused on developing emerging and advanced student leaders. At Aztec CORE, you'll learn alongside peers and enjoy engaging workshops and events, all while enjoying the mountains. The goal is to experience the value of relationships and reflection as important components of leadership.

Aztec Unity Project: Noah Homes 

Take part in something greater than yourself and strengthen yourself and your organization by making connections with other groups on campus and the San Diego community.

Join Aztec Unity Project Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 for a two-day service learning project at Noah Homes, where we will prepare and set up for their annual Enchanted Village — food and transportation provided. Attendance both days is mandatory.

Camp, Learn on Palomar Mountain

In conjunction with the SDSU Association of Anthropology Students, professor Seth Mallios, lead archaeologist on the Nathan Harrison site, will give a guided tour of the Harrison Serenity Ranch site and explain the archaeological significance of the first Black-owned homestead in San Diego County. The two-day camping trip, which takes place Nov. 11 and 12, will include bonding activities and opportunities to explore the site.

Film Screening Explores SD Community

The College of Arts and Letters is hosting a documentary screening with anthropology alumnus Brian Mooney at the Conrad Prebys Student Union Theatre from 3-4:30 p.m. Nov.15.

Event Looks at Kirby’s Early Work 

Before he designed the Marvel Universe, Jack Kirby, the acclaimed late comic book artist, helped mythologize American boyhood in a series of comics about “kid gangs.” 

Join SDSU’s Center for Comic Studies for a discussion led by Charles Hatfield, author of “Hands on Fire: The Comics Art of Jack Kirby,” on this influential, yet now neglected, genre.

Vigil Will Honor the Trans Day of Rememberance

Join The Pride Center, in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters, for the Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at Scripps Cottage. 

Started in memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman killed in 1998, TDOR is observed nationally on November 20 by community organizations and advocates.

Red & Black Safe Ride Program Expands

The newly revamped Red & Black Safe Ride program offers students a free, quick and safe transportation method during weekdays from 6 p.m. to midnight at an expanded set of designated pick-up and drop-off locations  throughout the campus. 

The program, with increased services over the last year, provides campus community members with two options: 

• Safe Ride Shuttle Rotation — During weekdays from 6 - 10 p.m., University Police Department Community Service Officers will drive two shuttle vans constantly on one route, rotating in opposite directions to decrease wait times. 
• On-Demand Safe Ride Requests — During weekdays, from 10 p.m. to midnight, riders can request a quick on-demand ride from one of the designated pick-up locations to another through the SDSU Safe App.

Sweet Land Opera

See a free screening of “Sweet Land Opera” from 11 a.m.- 12:15 p.m. at the Gold Auditorium in the Bioscience Center.

When COVID-19 forced the shutdown of "Sweet Land," an opera by The Industry, only two weeks into its world premiere run, the ensemble came together for one final impassioned performance, which was recorded to preserve their work.

Holding Time, Tracing Light

Holding Time, Tracing Light presents the artwork of San Francisco Bay Area artist Rachel Phillips in her first San Diego exhibition. Organized in collaboration with SDSU’s Special Collections and University Archives, it will be on view through Dec. 7 at the University Art Gallery School of Art + Design Art North Building, Fourth Floor Courtyard. One SDSU Creative Activism

Artist Talk presented 6:30-7:15 p.m. Nov. 9 at Templo Mayor in the student union by Cannupa Hanska Luger, a New Mexico-based multidisciplinary artist creating monumental installations, sculpture and performance to communicate urgent stories about 21st-century indigeneity.

There will be a panel discussion immediately following the artist talk featuring Luger and professors Kim Stringfellow and Esme Murdock. Attendance at this event will count for 15 points toward the Arts Alive SDSU Certificate.

At the first virtual workshop at noon Nov. 7, “Major Selection & Career Options,” learn about resources and strategies to help find your major and explore relevant career options. 

The second virtual workshop, held 1 p.m. Nov. 9, will help empower you with the skills needed to negotiate salary effectively in the competitive job market. 

A third workshop, “Beyond Borders: Empowering International Students,” will be held in Templo Mayor in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union at noon Nov. 15.
