Homecoming week is Oct. 21-26, culminating with the Homecoming football game against
Washington State University at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Snapdragon Stadium — free tickets
for students!
The week is packed with activities for students and alumni alike, including Homecoming
Week Kickoff from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union Goldberg
Courtyard, the 28th Annual Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Aztec War Memorial and NPHC
Yardshow, both on Oct. 25; and the Homecoming Fun Run & Festival on Oct. 26.

Register for Winter Session today
Looking to get on the fast track towards your degree? Winter Session classes are a
great way to do it.
Courses run from Dec. 19 to Jan. 16 and are a great opportunity for students to make
up ground toward graduation, return to school or explore a new area of interest.
Registration is open until Dec. 17. Visit SDSU Winter Session for more information.
Google Gemini is now accessible to students
SDSU is excited to announce that students, faculty and staff can now access Google Gemini, a general artificial intelligence resource, using your SDSUid.
Students can leverage Gemini as a study buddy, feeding it subject matter and prompting it to test their knowledge. Gemini can also offer feedback on a student’s response, helping to ensure depth of understanding on a given topic.
SDSU to join the Pac-12 Conference
SDSU has accepted an invitation to join the Pac-12 Conference, the school announced
Sept. 12. SDSU joins league stalwarts Oregon State and Washington State, along with
Boise State, Colorado State and Fresno State as the newest members of the league.

Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month Continues in October
Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month continues through Oct. 15! Each year SDSU celebrates the culture and traditions of Hispanic, Chicanx and Latinx communities. As a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, SDSU proudly honors the many contributions of our Hispanic, Chicanx and Latinx students, faculty, staff and partners. Great Events Lineup For Filipinx American History Month
Join the APIDA Center in October as it hosts a series of events to celebrate the contributions of Filipinx
Americans to our culture in connection with Filipinx American History Month.
Highlights of the history month calendar include the 11th annual Night Market from
4-9 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union Goldberg Courtyard and the
fifth annual Makers’ Market from 1-6 p.m. Oct. 31, also in the Goldberg Courtyard.
You can also create some authentic crafts on Monday nights at the cultural crafting nights hosted at the APIDA Center.

Family Weekend: It’s Tradition
Family Weekend is Oct. 4 and 5, and it’s a perfect time to introduce your family to your new home
at SDSU and for all families to celebrate their students’ experiences and accomplishments
at SDSU.
There are events for family members of all ages, including a Family Weekend brunch
at Montezuma Hall, a tailgate at Snapdragon Stadium, campus tours and open houses, a picnic and serenade with a live band at Scripps
Cottage, welcome back receptions, an involvement expo for students, department open

"Vision 2074" art exhibit kicks off October 1
The university art gallery’s Vision 2074 exhibit begins its two-month run Oct. 1, which includes an opening reception from 4-7 p.m. Oct. 4 at the gallery. The reception will include a panel discussion at 6 p.m. with Bruce Appleyard, a professor of city planning and urban design in the School of Public Affairs.
Vision 2074 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the “Temporary Paradise?” (Donald Appleyard and Kevin Lynch,1974), one of the few forward-projecting planning documents for our multinational region, by calling upon designers to boldly envision what our region can become in the next 50 years and beyond.
Enter the SDSU Social Venture Challenge
The SDSU Social Venture Challenge is an annual pitch competition open to SDSU undergraduate students and graduate students
and other SoCal colleges and universities by invitation. This year’s pitch is based
on identifying a significant problem related to the impact of food insecurity in our
region and presenting an innovative solution resulting in a social venture.
Teams will compete for a $15,000 grand prize and $35,000 in total cash prizes. This
year’s challenge will be held March 21, and the application window is open until Dec.

The SDSU Library has a jam packed calendar in October!
Our Nipa Hut: A Story in the Philippines book reading, Oct. 10: In celebration of the upcoming Filipinx American History Month, juvenile author Rachell Abalos will read her new children’s book "Our Nipa Hut: A Story of the Philippines."
Hugh C. Hyde Living Writer Series readings, Oct. 23 and Oct. 30: Authors Jessica Kim (Oct. 23) and Jeffrey Dale Lofton (Oct. 30) will read excerpts
from their novels, “Stand Up Yumi Chung!” and “Red Clay Suzie,” respectively.
Reading Hour, Tuesdays: Join librarians and others for a quiet hour of reading on the first floor of the
library addition. Bring a book or choose a suggestion from the librarians.
Science of Surfing Exhibit, all month: Explore the connections between science and the advancement of modern surfing! The
exhibit highlights wave energy, tides, types of surf breaks and conditions, and the
custodianship of our oceans, explained through charts, diagrams, photographs, art,
and videos.
Build IT Costume Contest, Oct. 31: Come to build IT, the library’s maker space in Love Library 1st floor, and be creative.
Attend an orientation session to use the equipment or come for one of these drop-in

SDSU Go! gets spooky for the month of October to help you get into the Halloween spirit!
Go to the San Diego Zoo for Howl-O-Scream, check out “Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors”

zoo and Skate World, as space is limited!

If you’re stressed or just need a listening ear, counselors from Counseling & Psychological Services provide confidential support to SDSU students on a drop-in basis through the Talk It Out program.

my.SDSU Maintenance Oct. 25-26
Students will not be able to log onto my.SDSU from 5 p.m. Oct 25 to 5 p.m. Oct. 26 due to system upgrades occurring on the website.
Once the upgrade has been completed, my.SDSU will have a fresh new look with the same
functions and features as before.
If students have any questions or notice any issues after the upgrade, submit a ticket to the IT Help Desk.

Big Data Hackathon coming to SDSU Oct. 12 and 19
The 2024 Big Data Hackathon, which takes place Oct. 12 and 19 in Charles Hostler Hall, is a collaborative event where domain knowledge experts, business analysts, programmers, graphic designers, journalists and map makers work together to create useful solutions to important problems in San Diego. “Climbing Alternate Peaks: Reintegration After Traumatic Brain Injury” event Oct. 17
Join us at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the SDSU Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center’s Fowler Family Ballroom for a wide-ranging discussion with nationally-renowned advocates, scholars, and athletes as we examine the consequences of traumatic brain injury and the ways in which survivors deal with loss, recovery and resilience. Hansen Peace Chair Strategic Humanitarianism Lecture and Q&A Oct. 10
The Fred J. Hansen Peace Chair presents “Strategic Humanitarianism: The U.S. Refugee Admissions Program After the Cold War,” a lecture by Idean Salehyan, an assistant professor at the University of North Texas. The lecture, which takes place from 5:30-7 p.m. Oct. 10 in Storm Hall 127, poses questions about the U.S. refugee resettlement policies and argues that refugee admissions should be understood as more than a humanitarian initiative, but also reflects foreign policy priorities. A Q&A with Salehyan will follow the lecture.

The Wellbeing Improvement Survey for Higher Education Settings survey launch begins
on Oct. 1! We encourage all students to participate for a chance to win a $25 Amazon
gift card or a Southwest Airlines Voucher!
WISHES is an important tool that helps SDSU learn more about student well-being and
to identify opportunities for improvement. Students will receive an email (subject
line, “SDSU WISHES survey” from “[email protected].”) with a unique link to
complete the survey, so please keep an eye on your inbox.
WISHES takes about 10 minutes, and your feedback will directly contribute to making SDSU
a better place for all students. Be sure to check your student email!
Black Excellence Think Tank Oct. 1
Join the SACD Black Excellence Task Force and SDSU’s African American Alumni Council
as they host the inaugural Black Excellence Think Tank from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Oct.
1 at the SDSU Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center.
It will be a transformative day of discussions, expert insights and actionable strategies
to advance Black student success at SDSU, highlighted by a keynote address by Compton
College President Keith Curry.

Apply for the Caminos al Éxito Program
The Office of HSI Affairs has been awarded the Aztec Parent Fund grant to implement Caminos al Éxito for the
2024-2025 academic year.
The program aims to enhance retention, graduation and career placement rates among
students in STEM and health care through culturally affirming components, family support,
community partnerships, skills and knowledge programming, and alumni connections,
especially among the Hispanic, first-gen and commuter populations.
