To all new and returning Aztecs, welcome to the start of the 2024-25 school year! 

Welcome Week, Aug. 22-31, is chock-full of opportunities to have fun and meet new friends at free, on-campus events courtesy of Aztec Nights. 

There’s a block party and an arcade night (Aug. 23), a self-care event (Aug. 25), a two-night carnival (Aug. 30-31), a donut-themed dance (Sept. 1), a casino-themed event complete with mocktails (Sept. 6) and a silent disco (Sept. 7), among other events.

Attend the A.S. Expo Aug. 28!

Discover your community in Associated Students by attending the A.S. Expo from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Aug. 28 along Centennial Walkway.

A.S. is a student-directed organization dedicated to serving and supporting students at SDSU. 

At this information fair, A.S. programs and services will be tabling and provide you with the opportunity to speak with those currently involved.

New Student and Family Convocation Aug. 24 

New Student and Family Convocation is Aug. 24 at Viejas Arena.

Convocation is one of SDSU’s most time-honored traditions that signifies the beginning of all new first-year, transfer and graduate students’ academic journeys at the university and serves as a bookend to commencement. 

Parents and family supporters are invited to attend. Attendees participate in a pinning ceremony that acknowledges the milestone and signifies their introduction to the SDSU community.

The final deadline for Aztec Scholarships is days away – Aug. 30 for awards in the 2024-25 academic year.

Most award notifications occur during the months of September and October, so be sure to check your SDSU email account and Aztec Scholarships regularly.

Aztec Football is Back!

The Aztecs are back for another exciting season on the gridiron at Snapdragon Stadium. 

Picked to finish eighth in the preseason Mountain West Conference poll, the team takes the field for the first time under first-year head coach Sean Lewis at 5 p.m. Aug. 31 against Texas A&M-Commerce.

Shanieka Ricketts and Nevin Harrison take home Olympic Silver!

Congratulations to two members of the Aztec family for bringing home silver medals at the 2024 Olympic Games!

SDSU Hall of Famer Shanieka Ricketts (Thomas) made it to the podium in her third Olympics, earning a silver medal for Jamaica in the triple jump. 

And current SDSU student Nevin Harrison won her second medal in three years, earning a silver medal in the C-1 200m canoe race in one of the closest races in history.

SDSU golf legend Xander Schauffele finished tied for 9th place in his quest for consecutive gold medals.

Community Centers host Open Houses for Welcome Week

SDSU’s Community Centers, the Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center and Hillel SDSU are planning open houses to welcome students back to campus.  

The 10 centers, formerly known as cultural resource centers, provide safe spaces for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds, women, the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, formerly incarcerated individuals, and other groups, along with their allies.

Celebrate Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month at SDSU

Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month is Sept. 15 to Oct. 15! Each year San Diego State University celebrates the culture and traditions of Hispanic, Chicanx and Latinx communities. As a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, SDSU proudly honors the many contributions of our Hispanic, Chicanx and Latinx students, faculty, staff and partners. Save the Date: “Waiting for Godot,” Sept. 27-Oct. 6

SDSU Theatre opens with "Waiting for Godot," an existential masterpiece by Nobel Prize-winning author Samuel Beckett. Main Stage Theatre, from Sept. 27-Oct. 6. 

In "Waiting for Godot," two wanderers, Vladimir and Estragon, wait by a lonely tree to meet up with Mr. Godot, an enigmatic figure in a world where time, place and memory blur together and meaning is where you find it. The two hope that Godot will change their lives for the better. Instead, two other travelers arrive, one man on the end of each other's rope. The results of the encounter are both funny and dangerous.

Go Global with SDSU’s World Music Concert Series

SDSU’s World Music Concert Series takes you to Asia and Africa during September. 

First, get a taste of melodies of the Arab World when Ali Paris performs at 6 p.m. Sept. 16. Next, Senegalese master musician Amadou Fall presents an intimate solo performance at 6 p.m. Sept. 23. And finally, Zimbeat, a San Diego-based ensemble that performs the traditional and modern music of South Africa, will perform at 6 p.m. Sept. 30.

ZIP Launchpad Fall Application Window Closes Sept. 13

The ZIP Launchpad helps SDSU students, staff, faculty and researchers launch a startup from their early stage idea. We strive to provide them a transformational experience to complement their SDSU education and launch successful startups into the community.

Are you an out-of-state student at SDSU? There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved on campus, from student organizations, campus events and other opportunities to connect with fellow Aztecs who share your passions.

You can also attend one of two Out of State Student receptions from 4-6 p.m. Aug. 27 inside Tula Community Center or Aug. 28 at Cholula inside the Huaxycac Residence Hall. Meet other out-of-state students and learn about how to get involved on campus. Refreshments and pizza will be served.

If you are an enthusiastic student who is passionate about SDSU, comfortable speaking in front of groups and wants to enhance their communication and leadership skills, the SDSU Ambassadors program is looking for you!

Being an SDSU Ambassador offers a rewarding opportunity to share your campus enthusiasm with prospective students and families!  Ambassadors provide campus tours to prospective students and their families, work at New Student Orientation, and also assist the university in a variety of campus events held year-round such as Explore SDSU, New Student and Family Convocation, Welcome Week, Aztec Nights, Homecoming, Family Weekend, athletic events and Commencement.
